Things to Consider Before Moving for Your Job

Is that dream job as good as it sounds? If you’re moving to a new town, you should weigh more than just the flashy employment package. Carefully consider the following before relocating to ensure that this is the correct move for you.

Is the Position a Good Fit?

Find out ahead of time what your duties will entail, making sure that you understand your responsibilities and your prospective employer’s expectations correctly. Research the company and, whenever possible, speak to other employees. Get a feel for the company culture.

The Cost of Living

If you will be getting a considerable salary bump for a job similar to the one you currently hold, it’s prudent to find out why. Is the cost of living in the area much higher than the town you live in now? Many reputable online sites provide cost-of-living calculators and comparisons. Be sure to do your research.

You may, for example, pay far more for property taxes, transportation expenses, or for pa electricity rates. It’s crucial to do comparison shopping for Pennsylvania electricity providers and other utilities to get an idea of your future expenses. That extra income won’t do you much good if higher living costs erode it.

Is There A Good Job Market In The Area?

If things don’t work out with your new employers, will you have other career options? Choosing a city with an active job market gives you a sense of confidence about potential future opportunities.

Your Support Network

You will also want to consider whether you’ll have a strong support network in the new city. If you have children, who will look after them when they’re sick? Moving to a new town might mean building a new support network. It’s not impossible to create a new support system, but it will take effort.

What is Usually in a Job Relocation Package?

Relocation packages vary widely. Before you sign up, ensure that you get the details in writing. We’ll discuss what most companies provide.

Packing and Unpacking

Many companies offer senior executives this perk. The moving company comes to your home at a predetermined date and packs your items for you. The company will then transport your belongings to your new home and unpack them for you.

A Reputable Moving Service and Insurance

Most firms will pay for a reliable moving company and insure your goods during the move. Check that the insured values cover you adequately if the movers damage something.

Home Sales or Lease-Breaking Assistance

Should the move entail breaking your current lease or losing money when selling your home, your new firm may reimburse you. They might assist with paying the fees, the shortfall in the sales price, or marketing your home on your behalf.

House-Hunting Trip

Many companies pay for one or two trips ahead of the move date to allow you to scout the new town for somewhere to live. They’ll pay for travel and accommodations—and possibly childcare, too.

Costs for Temporary Housing

Many firms give you thirty days of paid housing as a temporary solution while you find a new home.

Miscellaneous Expenses

Assistance with school transfers, care for frail parents, or clothing allowances are expenses that you may want to negotiate with the firm.

Tips For a Smooth Move

Plan Way Ahead of Time

Start getting ready eight to ten weeks before the move. You should allocate a budget, find the right day to move, and inventory your items. Create a folder to store copies of important documents and any information about the move.

Notify your children’s schools as early as possible.  Speak to your family doctor and get your medical records.

Arrange for Utilities

Notify your utility, phone, internet, and cable or satellite TV companies about your moving date to make sure everything is on when you move in. If you haven’t decided which companies to deal with yet, research them now. For example, get a head start by checking out Pennsylvania electricity plans.

Get Moving Supplies

If your company is paying for the move, the moving firm might provide free boxes if you are packing up your own house. You can also ask for discarded boxes at your local grocer or liquor store. Stock up on strong tape and bubble-wrap. Don’t forget to label each box clearly.

Declutter Now

Set aside some time every day to declutter. Sell what you can. Donate anything that is in good shape but that you can’t sell. Even worn old towels may be useful to an animal shelter. Throw out the rest.

Moving is a great way to start new so if you decide to move then check out these tips for a headache free move.
