On Craft and Creation: Mark Hauser Discusses Voice Acting and Life

Mark William Hauser broke into the acting world with a string of television appearances in the late 90s and early aughts. After making headway as a voice actor, Hauser would land notable appearances in hundreds of projects, including Alice in Borderland, Winx Club, and Monster Allergy.

A veteran of the voice acting profession and a noted entrepreneur with success in several different areas of work, Hauser has been keen to share what he has found to be the most successful guidance in his career.

Let’s explore Mark Hauser’s career and motivations in his own words, sourced from a conversation he had with the creative team at Ideamensch.

Building a Career

Mark Hauser first broke into the acting arena in 1996 with an array of voice acting and onscreen roles. Hauser would lean heavily on his neutral accent and his chameleonic ability to adapt to numerous American dialects. Thanks to his excellent chops behind the mic and his adaptability on set, Hauser would land an Actra Award Nomination en route to working with such stars as Michael Madsen, Nathalie Zea, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Most notably, Mark Hauser has helped to develop a career as a voice actor by applying his unique talents in a host of different scenarios. From dubbed animation in projects like Yakari to Netflix’s live-action mega-hits like Alice in Borderland, Hauser exemplifies the idea of always pushing forward.

Hauser states of his forward progress, “Basically, what I do every day is driven by my acting commitments.”

When he’s not physically on set or mentally immersed in a screenplay, Hauser is actively engaged in the researching aspect of the process. Hauser says, “I want to really learn each character’s background, their motivations, and their strengths and weaknesses. I want to know what makes them tick.”

Staying Motivated, Staying Excited

It is easy to stay focused and motivated when the work is coming in, but what about when the work isn’t flowing so easily? Over a multi-decade career, Hauser has learned that you have to stay busy and excited in order to stay motivated. For Hauser, this meant taking up reading again as he enveloped himself in more printed books.

Pointing to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on our socialization practices, Hauser advocates for quiet hobbies that you can practice on your own time. Hauser said in an interview, “There’s something satisfying about pausing all the devices and delving into a good book and I hope this trend continues.”

To stay focused on the work ahead, Hauser likes to incorporate his hobbies into his nightly routine. Hauser suggests making a list of things that you want to accomplish the next day before going to bed at night. Hauser says, “I scribble my creative ideas on a second sticky note. When inspiration strikes, I want to be prepared.”
