Keter Drives Sustainability Efforts with Expanded Use of UB Q’s Bio-Based Plastics
Home and outdoor product manufacturer Keter is expanding its sustainability efforts by incorporating more of UBQ Materials’ innovative bio-based thermoplastic. Known as UBQ, this plastic alternative is made entirely from landfill-bound waste using an advanced conversion process. Keter intends to use UBQ across multiple new product lines to reduce scope three emissions and progress further on its ESG targets.
In addition to its existing 55% recycled plastic content across all products, Keter will now include a 5-10% load of UBQ in a new eco-friendly line branded “Made With UBQ.” This move cements Keter’s market leadership in sustainability innovation for resin-based consumer goods. “We are committed to transforming our industry for the better,” said Keter, Co-Head of Israel and Chief Sustainability Officer Iftach Sachar. “UBQ provides a much bigger impact.”
By combining its global scale and reach with UBQ’s climate-positive material, Keter aims to deliver tangible climate benefits. The company will highlight its expanded UBQ usage and overall sustainability strategy at the upcoming UNFCCC COP28 climate summit. A new UBQ plant opening later this year in the Netherlands will enable accelerated integration of UBQ into Keter’s European manufacturing operations.
The increased supply capacity and localized production aligned with Keter’s facilities will further improve UBQ’s circular economy model in the region. UBQ Co-CEO and Chairman Albert Douer expressed, “This partnership demonstrates the real-world climate impact of customer collaboration to achieve the removal and avoidance of carbon emissions.” Douer added that Keter has pioneered combining virgin and recycled plastics and continues setting the bar higher across the industry regarding sustainable innovation.
Keter’s most recent Sustainability Report for 2022 shows the actual progress made towards stated climate goals, supported in part by UBQ usage. The newly expanded UBQ integration will facilitate continued leadership as Keter works to meet and exceed current and future environmental targets. At COP28, senior leaders from Keter and UBQ shared details on their collaboration during a panel on climate partnerships between corporates and startups.
They discussed how Keter leverages UBQ to accomplish net-zero objectives and the promising outlook for the long-standing cooperative relationship between the companies. Overall, Keter’s increased adoption of UBQ’s bio-based and inherently sustainable thermoplastic demonstrates how two mission-driven organizations can partner effectively to create real climate solutions. With UBQ as an integral part of its sustainability vision, Keter is accelerating its emissions reduction efforts and industry leadership in this area.
