Vision benefits
You are qualified to participate in the State’s Vision Program if you are a permanent state employee working at least half-time for the state. Once each calendar year, you are eligible to obtain an eye checkup, lenses, and a frame.
Employees represented in Bargaining Unit 6 (BU6) have access to vision coverage through their union trust fund; hence, they are not eligible to participate in the state’s vision program unless the form explicitly designates them as suitable for this program. For more information regarding eligibility requirements, please get in touch with the personnel office of your department. The terms of eligibility are up for negotiation in the collective bargaining process.
You can select one of two different vision plans from the state. You won’t have to pay anything for the Basic Vision Plan, but if you want, you can upgrade to the Superior Vision Plan for an additional monthly fee.
Premier vision plan
All active state employees, except rank-and-file BU6 personnel, who receive their vision benefits through trust, are eligible to participate in the Premier Vision Plan for a minimal monthly employee cost share. This is the only vision plan available to active state employees. The Premier Vision Plan allows employees to receive things like frames and lenses, progressive lenses that are fully covered, and additional discounts.
Suppose an employee wishes to enroll in the Premier Plan. In that case, they can do so during the annual Open Registration period or within the first sixty days of their employment if they are newly eligible for benefits.
The state will contribute $8.27 toward the monthly premium, which will be deducted from each employee’s paycheck as a vision deduction. If an employee opts to participate in the Premier Vision Plan, the additional premium contribution will promptly be withdrawn from their state pay warrant.
The employee vision coverage will begin on the first of the month after the pay period in which the earning statement indicates your employer contribution and vision deduction. This is the period during which the employee will be responsible for their vision care costs. Please get in touch with the department’s personnel office if you require further information regarding your enrollment or effective date.
If you choose the Premier Vision Plan, all of your dependents who you want to be covered by the plan must also be enrolled in it to receive coverage under it. You are not permitted to register in both the Basic and Premier Vision Plans for range simultaneously, nor can you enroll in only the Basic Vision Plan while leaving any dependents on the Premier Vision Plan.
Suppose you are a newly hired employee or an employee who has recently become eligible for benefits. In that case, you can enroll through your department’s personnel office during the first sixty days of your employment. When the Open Enrollment documents are mailed to your current address that is on file with the State Operator’s Office, all other eligible employees can enroll directly through VSP throughout the Open Enrollment period. Your home address must be on file with the State Controller’s Office (SCO).
